Gallery of Polish Painting

The District Museum in Rzeszów houses a permanent exhibition entitled the Gallery of Polish Painting which features carefully selected works from its collection (some of which have never been displayed before). This exhibition (with an interesting arrangement) includes outstanding paintings which are incredibly valuable in artistic terms and which can be considered as some of the most significant works of selected Polish artists.

The exhibition focuses on easel paintings created between the 18th century and 1939. The masterpieces have been arranged in a chronological and thematic order, and portraits constitute a significant part of the exhibition (along with a series of old Polish portraits). The exhibition also includes landscape and cityscape paintings, genre scenes as well as still life.

The paintings were mostly painted on canvas (a few were also painted on cardboard, wooden board and sheet metal) by the greatest artists of the time (and the representatives of their time, movements, trends and tendencies).
The exhibition includes works by famous Polish painters, including: Jan Nepomucen Gromacki, Alonzo Rescan, January Suchodolski, Aleksander Kotsis, Wojciech Gerson, Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz, Władysław Czachórski, Henryk Siemiradzki, Maksymilian Gierymski, Aleksander Gierymski, Józef Chełmoński, Józef Brandt, Wojciech Kossak, Konrad Krzyżanowski, Ferdynand Ruszczyc, Józef Mehoffer, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Pankiewicz, Leon Wyczółkowski, Teodor Axentowicz, Kazimierz Sichulski, Bronisława Rychter-Janowska, Olga Boznańska, Wojciech Weiss, Włodzimierz Tetmajer, Jan Stanisławski, Andrzej Pronaszka, Jan Cybis, Tytus Czyżewski, Zygmunt Waliszewski, Czesław Rzepiński and Wacław Taranczewski.

The distinctive arrangement of the Gallery of Polish Painting (around a new layout) contains nearly 120 paintings by several dozen masters among which one can admire beautiful compositions by the representatives of the most important art movements (and which belong to many famous artistic series and subjects) as well as rare works representing the achievements of Polish painters.

The Gallery was opened on 2 October 2004 and after minor additions and interesting modifications it can now be considered as one of the most valuable collections in this part of Poland. The District Museum in Rzeszów hopes that you will enjoy this exquisite permanent exhibition.
