Nowadays, the Regional Museum in Rzeszów is a local government-supported institution of significance to the whole province, and it enjoys the status of a registered public museum. Its 70-year-long history is a part of the Polish museum tradition, marked by numerous examples of renowned museums which have evolved from small collections, frequently of coincidental origins. Furthermore the museum's history shows how the surrounding realities change and, most prominently, testifies to the development of the town of Rzeszów itself.

The idea of establishing a museum in Rzeszów, although considered as early as the beginning of the 20 th century, took a relatively long time in assuming the real shape of an institution. It was only in 1935 that a group of community leaders, gathered around the Regional Society of the Land of Rzeszów, decided to establish a museum which would collect items characteristic of the region. In the 1930's, the small town of Rzeszów could only afford a community museum without any proper premises of its own. In the second half of the 20 th century, Rzeszów's improved status was of crucial importance to the development of the Museum. First, it was transformed into the Museum of the Town of Rzeszów (1945) and then into the Regional Museum (1951), enjoying regular sources of finance, its own premises and, most importantly, the continual growth of its collection and professional staff.
